How did you get the idea for James and the Giant Peach?

I had a kind of fascination with the thought that an apple...(there's a lot of apple trees around here, and fruit trees, and you can watch them in the throught the summer growing  bigger and bigger from a tiny litte apple to bigger and bigger ones)... and it seemed to me an obvious thought, what would happen if it didn't stop growing? Why should it stop growing at a certain size? And this appealed to me and I thought this was quite a nice little idea and (then I had to think) of which fruit I should take for my story. I thought apple, pear, plum, peach. Peach is rather nice, a lovely fruit. It's pretty and it's big and it's squishy and you can go into it and it's a got a big seed in the middele which you can play with. And so the story started.

나는 사과에 대해 다소 마음이 끌려 있었다. (여기엔 많은 사과나무와 과일 나무들 그리고 여름이면 아주 작은 사과가 점점 더 커져서 큰 사과가 되는 걸 볼 수 있다. ) 이것은 내게 명확한 소재인 듯 보였다. 만약에 성장을 멈추었다면 무슨일이 벌어질까? 왜 얼마만큼 크면 성장을 멈추어야만 할까? 이런것들이 나에게 영감을 줬다. 나는 이러한 것들이 꽤 괜찮은 사소한 아이디어라고 생각을 했었다. 그래서 나느 나의 스토리에 나오는 과일들에 대해 생각을 해야 했었다. 사과, 배, 자두, 복숭아를 생각했다. 복숭아가 그 중에서 괜찮은 편이었다. 정말 사랑스러운 과일이다. 복숭아는 예브고 크고 흐늘흐늘해서 그 안으로 들어갈 수도 있다. 그리고 복숭아는 함께 놀 수 있는 중간에 거대한 씨앗도 가지고 있다. 그래서 이 이야기가 시작되었다.
