How easy was it to write Matilda?

I got it wrong. I spent 6 or 8 or 9 months writing it, and when I'd finished, it wasn't right. I mean it just wasn't right. I hadn't backed up and I hadn't kept changing, because the character, the main character the little girl keeps changing at you all the time and I hadn't bothered to go back and re-write that for several chapters. So a year ago I started the whole book again  and re-wrote every word and I knew where I was wrong and I was able to get  the character right and all the other characters and all the different motivations and the things like that and it was a very interesting experience that I've never had to do before, but maybe in my old age I'm getting not so good at it and it takes longer. I really had to re-write the whole book! And now I'm fairly happy with it. I think it's OK. But it certainly wasn't before.

마틸다를 얼마나 쉽게 썼나?

나는 잘못했었다. 마틸다를 쓰기 위해 6,8,9개월 정도 걸렸다. 근데, 그 작품을 끝냈을 때 그것이 잘못되었다는 것을 알았다. 그러니까 내가 생각한게 아니었던거지요. 나는 원래대로 바꾸지도 않았고 수정도 하지 않았었다. 왜냐하면 그 주인공인 어린 소녀의 캐릭터가 계속 변화하고 있었기 때문이었죠. 그래서, 몇 챕터를 수정하거나 다시 쓰는것을하지 않았죠. 그래서 1년이 지난 후에 다시 그 책을 쓰기 시작했죠. 모든 단어들을 다시 썼죠. 그러면서 나는 알게되었죠. 어디에서 잘못되었는지 그 캐릭터를 제대로 이해할수 있었고, 모든 다른 캐릭터들, 다른 동기들, 내가 이전에 겪어보지 못한 매우 흥미로운 경험들과 같은 것들... 그러나 아마도 늙은 나이때문이지 그렇게 잘하지 못한 것 같고, 시간도 많이 걸렸다. 나는 정말로 전체를 다시 써야만 했다. 지금은 그 작품을 완성해서 행복하다. 괜찮다고 생각한다. 그러나 이전에는 절대 아니었다.
